Surfski Basics

Roger Gocking Ossining, New York
Roger Gocking Blackburn 2008
Surfski(s) currently paddle:

I fall off surfskis! I paddle a Bushnell EFT and an Epic 18X Ultra
Paddles you use:

Epic Mid Wing
How long have you been paddling?

13 Years. This includes whitewater paddling as well.
Primary Paddling Location:

Croton River. Hudson River and Long Island Sound
Favorite Surfski Race, Why?

Adirondack Canoe Classic(The Ninety Miler) because of the camaraderie. The race goes on for three days and you camp and eat with your fellow paddlers. You get to know them and become part of a community.

Main Training Partner if any:

Mostly train alone, but on Sundays paddle (leisurely) across Long Island Sound with my buddy Gidon Schwarcz with whom I also often paddle whitewater.

Racing Accomplishments

- Done the Blackburn Challenge several times.
- Won the Tourning Kayak class in the Adirondack Canoe Classic twice.
- Won the senior section of the ROTC many times.
- Crossed the finish line first in the GoZero Beacon Race in 2008 but was disqualified for going the wrong way around Bannerman Island! Missed out on $500!!

Other Significant Athletic Accomplishments:

In a previous life I was a rock climber/mountaineer/runner and x-country skier. As a rock climber I climbed many of the "Big walls" in Yosemite and then as a mountaineer climbed in the Cordillera Blanca and put up a few first ascents there also. Eventually took a crack at Everest but did not quite make it. For many winters I used to do the Canadian Ski Marathon. I eventually collected seven golds but now I am retired from that 100 miler.

What you like about surfskis, surfski racing, paddling:

Scared of surfskis. I fall out of them even in pond-like conditions. But fast touring kayaks are another matter. I like the sense of cutting through the water and getting to see places from a perspective landlubbers never can. At times I definitely like to go up against other paddlers to see how I stack up against them.
